Hi, I am Desiray Miquelarena, Hampton Roads Family Photographer.
I am a wife, mom, and possibly everything in between.
Today I want to share some of the historical areas in the Hampton Roads area and why you should visit them.
If you’re anywhere near Hampton Roads and even slightly into history (or just want a cool day trip), you’re sitting on one of the most important regions in early American history. No exaggeration—this is where a lot of it actually began.
But don’t worry, this isn’t going to feel like a textbook. Think of this as your laid-back guide to some awesome places you can explore without it feeling like homework.
🌊 First Stop: First Landing State Park
Where it all kicked off.
This is literally where English settlers first landed in 1607 before heading to Jamestown. Today, it’s way more peaceful—think hiking trails, beach views, and shady spots to just relax.
Why it’s worth it:
You can soak in history without being stuck indoors. Walk the same ground as the first settlers, then hit the beach right after.
Afterwards, head over to the ocean front. You can rent bike's to pedal along the board walk and visit King Neptune. You might not need the whole hour if you are not as up to date with your biking habits 😅 or if your kids love to yell faster like ours.
🏰 Step Back in Time: Colonial Williamsburg
Basically time travel, but real.
People in full colonial outfits, blacksmiths actually working, old-school shops—it’s like walking into the 1700s.
Why it’s worth it:
It’s interactive. You can talk to “historical” figures, watch live demonstrations, and actually feel what life was like before electricity and Wi-Fi (brace yourself).
One of my favorite places because everything is right there where you can walk around on the old cobble stones. As a local photographer in the Hampton Roads area I suggest checking out the gardens that are beautifully manicured. Afterwards there are several tasty restaurants right there!
⚔️ Where America Won Its Freedom: Yorktown Battlefield
Big history moment, low-key peaceful vibe.
This is where the Revolutionary War basically ended. Today, it’s calm, scenic, and surprisingly relaxing.
Why it’s worth it:
It’s one of those places where you realize, “Oh… this is actually where it happened.” Plus, great views of the York River.
This area is actually my top favorite place to have photography sessions. You have the beach, battle field grasses, trails... it truly is a perfect blend all in one area.
Bonus* Great place for 4th of July fireworks
I recommend staying right there in the Yorktown Beach Hotel. No, driving, no traffic, you can watch the fireworks right from your balcony!
🧱 Hidden Gem Energy: Fort Monroe
History + ocean views = underrated combo.
This massive stone fort has serious Civil War history and was a safe haven for enslaved people seeking freedom.
Why it’s worth it:
You get deep history, cool architecture, and waterfront views—all in one place.
There is a walking tour you can check out, hang out at the beach or checkout Oozlefinch Beers & Blending, It is a great brewery that usually has a food truck and live music with a big grassy area for little ones to run around.
Dead Rise also has some amazing seafood and top notch Bloody Mary's with a big fat piece of bacon to top it off 😋

This is another one of those great spots for 4th of July fireworks! What is not awesome about seeing fireworks where our nations history began?
🌅 Coastal Views + History: Cape Henry Lighthouse
Climb it. Trust me.
One of the oldest lighthouses in the country, sitting right where ships first arrived.
Why it’s worth it:
The climb is short, and the view at the top is 100% worth the effort. Great photo spot too.

Always check ahead if they are open to the public.
⚓ Big Ship Energy: USS Wisconsin (BB-64) at Nauticus
Yes, you can actually walk on it.
This isn’t a replica—it’s a real battleship. And it’s huge.
Why it’s worth it:
You get a hands-on look at naval history, and it’s honestly just cool to explore something that massive up close.
My family loves coming here around Christmas to visit Santa. Yes! The whole ship is decorated top to bottom with the most amazing Christmas lights display and the kids get cookies and hot chocolate, write a letter to Santa and put it in the mailbox for Santa to take back with him! It is definitely a must do at least once.
🏡 Bonus Stop: Bacon's Castle
Old, a little mysterious, and very underrated.
One of the oldest brick homes in America, tied to an early rebellion you probably didn’t learn much about.
Why it’s worth it:
It’s quieter than the big tourist spots, which makes it perfect if you want something different.
I recommend taking the ferry from Jamestown, it is one of those things that just seems so much cooler than being stuck in a car with little ones 😅 unless they're napping.
So… Why Hampton Roads?
Because you can go from:
- standing where America began
- to walking through a colonial town
- to climbing a lighthouse
- to exploring a battleship
…all in one trip.
It’s history, but not the boring kind. It’s the kind you can actually experience.
Final Tip
Make it a weekend thing. Hit a couple spots each day, grab some seafood in between, and don’t rush it. This area has layers—and it’s way better when you take your time.
