The Tobacco Road
My first favorite place in Yorktown, VA, isn’t a long road by any means. It’s a short stretch that connects the battlefield welcome center to the beach near the grassy picnic area. Growing up, I loved going for a run along that half-mile path, often imagining what it must have been like in the 18th century—carrying tobacco down to the ships waiting along the river.
Sometimes, I would close my eyes and picture treasures buried just beneath the enchanted grassy fields, letting my imagination bring the past to life beneath my feet.
Picnic Point Overlooking the York River
My second favorite location might sound simple — a grassy picnic area by the water — but hear me out.
In spring, the first thing that greets you is the blend of scents drifting through the air: barbecue grills, picnic spreads, and the salt of the river breeze. Layered over it all is laughter, music, and families reconnecting after long winters apart.
Walk closer and the scene unfolds like a living postcard: dogs trotting happily beside their owners, frisbees gliding through the air, fishermen casting lines, and hammocks swaying under shady trees. It’s the kind of place where time slows down without anyone noticing.
From the grass, you can see the bridge stretching toward Gloucester Point and the fishing pier standing steady in the distance. It’s simple. Familiar. And somehow, that’s exactly what makes it magical. Bonus — there’s a bathroom right there, so no searching required. It is a safe place to have your little ones run around and not worry about impending dangers.

Gloucester Point (Tyndall’s Point) — A Quiet Historic Treasure
On the other side of the bridge sits Gloucester Point, tucked beside it is a small waterfront park layered with history. Old bunkers rest quietly in the landscape, reminders of its strategic importance along the river.
Named after early surveyor Robert Tyndall, the point later gained recognition when John Smith recorded and mapped the area. Stand here long enough and it’s easy to imagine rowing across the river centuries ago, charting unknown waters as tensions rose between world powers.
It was also here that Virginia’s first Civil War shot was fired — a moment that would help shape the course of American history. Today, the breeze and sweeping views make it feel peaceful, yet deeply rooted in the past.
Ahoy, Matey! Pirate Festival Fun
The annual Invasion of Yorktown Pirate Festival transforms Riverwalk Landing into a lively pirate village filled with costumed performers, music, sword fights, and ships along the shoreline. Families, food vendors, and treasure-seeking kids fill the waterfront, making it one of the most spirited and memorable events of the year.
Gold coins for the kids, great food for the adults — and easily our family’s favorite festival.
Yorktown Beaches
Soft sand, gentle waves, and glowing sunsets make the waterfront a perfect place to unwind. Pack a picnic or grab takeout from a nearby eatery and settle in as the sun dips low, painting the sky in gold and coral hues. Afterward, stroll the shoreline or even dance beneath fading light. The peaceful riverfront creates a romantic, relaxed atmosphere couples never forget.
A Scenic Drive Through Yorktown Battlefields
One of the best ways to experience Yorktown is by taking a slow drive through its historic battlefields. Winding roads pass monuments, cannons, and rolling fields that once shaped the American Revolution. Quiet pull-offs invite you to pause, stretch your legs, and soak it all in.
